The Los Angeles Lakers were initially the leading candidates to acquire Brook Lopez during free agency. But after Lopez surprisingly signed with the Los Angeles Clippers on Day 1, the Lakers were left scrambling to solidify their center position. Despite concerns over his past off-court issues, the Lakers ultimately landed former No. 1 pick Deandre Ayton on Wednesday.
Yet, the Lakers aren’t finished making moves. According to NBA insider Evan Sidery, the franchise remains focused on adding Al Horford from the Boston Celtics.
“Even after signing Deandre Ayton, the Lakers remain in strong pursuit of Al Horford. Ideally, Los Angeles wants to add a pick-and-roll lob threat alongside a stretch-five. Signing Ayton and Horford would certainly accomplish that goal,’ Sidery reported.

Horford played four seasons with the Celtics. He was a key contributor to the Celtics’ 2024 championship squad and brings invaluable postseason experience. His leadership and floor spacing could complement Ayton’s athleticism and interior presence.

Meanwhile, Shams Charania of ESPN revealed that Ayton will earn $34 million next season. The Athletic added that his deal with the Lakers is a two-year contract worth $16.6 million, including a player option for the second year.
Ayton has logged seven NBA seasons and 398 career games so far. He is best remembered for anchoring the Phoenix Suns’ frontcourt during their 2021 run to the NBA Finals. Last season, he averaged 14.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game.
