The Los Angeles Lakers are once again looking to shape up their frontcourt. With a clear need for rim protection and size, the Lakers are in the market for a young big who can anchor the defense next to Anthony Davis.
Brett Siegel of Clutchpoints noted that Walker Kessler remains a prime target for the Lakers, despite the uncertainty around his availability. The Utah Jazz showed no intention of making the 22-year-old big man available, but that has not stopped the Lakers from making calls. The front office reportedly explored trade ideas involving Kessler and Utah forward John Collins.
Jazz insider Andy Larson of the Salt Lake Tribune added fuel to the speculation, saying the Lakers have an offer on the table. “Giving up multiple picks to get there is on the table right now. I don’t know if the Jazz take it. Certainly, they haven’t so far.” Kessler is a shot blocker and rebounder, and Utah considers him a foundational piece of their rebuild.

The Lakers’ need is pressing. They lack a true starting caliber center outside of Davis and limited trade assets to work with unless they are willing to part with someone like Austin Reaves. That puts added pressure on General Manager Rob Pelinka to find creative ways to make a deal happen, especially with Kessler, which is expected to cost a lot.
The Los Angeles Lakers Face Tough Road Ahead To Fill Center Position

Walker put up substantial numbers last season, averaging 11.1 points, 12.2 rebounds, and 2.4 blocks per game. His size and shot-blocking ability would give the Lakers a much-needed defensive boost in their depth. With few dependable options at the Center, Kessler’s skill set makes him a prime target.

However, for the Lakers, getting Kessler from the Jazz won’t be easy. Utah’s Danny Ainge is famous for asking a lot in trades, and the Lakers don’t have that much budget to offer. With just one first-round pick they can trade, the Lakers will have difficulty landing one of the league’s best young centers.
