Since arriving in Los Angeles, Luka Doncic has fully embraced the Lakers and their passionate fan base. His commitment to the team appears deeper than just a temporary change of jersey. Following his unexpected midseason trade from the Dallas Mavericks, Doncic has shown motivation to prove himself at the highest level.
There’s anticipation that Doncic will remain in Los Angeles long-term. According to reports, he is expected to sign a massive contract extension worth $160 million over three years. Sam Amick of The Athletic recently noted that the Lakers are optimistic about sealing the deal next month.
“So long as they’re able to secure Doncic’s signature on an extension when he’s eligible on Aug. 2, as is widely expected, then every move from there must be made with a long-term view in mind,” Amick wrote.

Doncic has been known throughout his career for his loyalty. Prior to being traded, he had spent his entire NBA journey with the Dallas Mavericks. Even though his departure from Dallas was abrupt and emotional, it didn’t change his approach. Rather, he remains a player who values long-term commitment and team culture.
This isn’t the first time Doncic has hinted at a lengthy stay with the Lakers. During his introductory press conference in Los Angeles, he spoke openly about his desire to have a lasting future with the franchise.

The Mavs picked Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA draft. In an interview with CBS Sports, former NBA star Avery Johnson expressed his clear preference for the rookie sensation over former franchise cornerstone Luka Doncic.
“Man, give me Cooper Flagg. This team is going to be tremendous once Kyrie Irving gets healthy. They’re going to re-sign Daniel Gafford, obviously. There’s been talk about Kyrie Irving re-signing. This team is going to be built to be one of the best two-way teams in the league,” Johnson said.
The Mavericks’ decision to draft Flagg appears to reflect a loss of faith in Doncic. Doncic now faces pressure to remind the Mavs of his value in the upcoming season, especially if comparisons between the two intensify.
