The Toronto Raptors may not boast household names like LeBron James or Stephen Curry or a once-in-a-generation prospect like Victor Wembanyama. However, that could soon change. The 2024-25 campaign saw the team finish with just 30 wins. Now, Raptors president Masai Ujiri appears ready to shift the franchise’s trajectory.
According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst on The Hoop Collective podcast, Toronto is preparing to make a major move.
“I don’t want to get too far afield from this. But since this has come up, the Raptors are a team that is starting to make noise within the league about looking for a big fish,” Windhorst said.

The Raptors’ front office has ample ammunition to pursue a marquee player. Toronto could craft a compelling offer with four unprotected first-round picks, three pick swaps, and one protected pick at their disposal. Additionally, core talents like Scottie Barnes and Brandon Ingram add even more flexibility for Ujiri to work with.
The team’s current roster lacks the elite star power needed to compete in a league dominated by dynamic duos and MVP-caliber leaders. That mediocrity is no longer acceptable to a franchise with championship ambitions.

Ujiri has never been afraid to bet big. In 2018, Ujiri stunned the league by trading for Kawhi Leonard, leading to the Raptors’ first NBA championship. Now, history may be preparing to repeat itself. According to ESPN’s Brian Windhorst, that chase could include one of the league’s biggest names.
“Any team that wants to make a move this summer, especially a team in the Eastern Conference, you’re going to have Giannis on the board,” Windhorst said.
The Raptors aren’t content to sit in the NBA’s middle tier. They’re hunting for greatness again. And if Ujiri has his way, the next face of the franchise may soon be arriving in Toronto.
