Victor Wembanyama has chosen a unique path this offseason that is far removed from the bright lights and cameras of the NBA. Following the conclusion of the San Antonio Spurs’ 2024-25 campaign, the 7’4″ star decided to use his extended break to seek inner peace and personal growth.
Wemby committed to a 10-day retreat at the historic Shaolin Temple in Zhengzhou, China. The place is known for its deep-rooted spiritual and martial arts traditions.
This wasn’t a sightseeing vacation. Wembanyama completely immersed himself in the experience. He traded in his basketball routine for silence, reflection, and simplicity. Images emerged online of Wemby fully bald and dressed in traditional monk robes.

The towering Frenchman was not treated as an NBA celebrity during his stay. Instead, he was accepted as a humble learner by the Shaolin monks, even dining and practicing alongside them.
Wembanyama missed the latter part of the season due to deep vein thrombosis. He has clearly found a profound way to use his downtime.

While many athletes might opt for rest or training, Wemby chose mental clarity and spiritual discipline. He is probably the first NBA player to take on a monastic lifestyle.
