Basketball fans are teeing off on Dave Portnoy after his beloved Boston Celtics’ championship repeat dreams were crushed by the New York Knicks with a blowout loss on Friday night.
Dave Portnoy was adamant throughout the series that his Celtics would prevail, initially predicting a victory in five games. Before Boston’s ugly collapse in Game 1, Portnoy walked back on the initial prediction and declared a sweep for his C’s:
I said it would be a gentleman’s sweep. I was wrong. The Knicks don’t belong in the same gym with us. #celticsin3

The Celtics’ hopes were essentially doomed when Jayson Tatum suffered a season-ending Achilles tear late in Game 4, a 121-113 Knicks victory. Boston kept their repeat bid alive with a 127-102 home win in Game 5, but the Knicks finished the job with a 119-81 victory at Madison Square Garden.
Social media did not forget what Portnoy had to say about the Knicks during the series, and they let him hear it after the Celtics were eliminated in humiliating fashion:
“DAVE PORTNOY, COME OUTSIDE BRIAN WINDHORST, COME OUTSIDE BILL SIMMONS, COME OUTSIDE!!” wrote the @EverythingKnicks X/Twitter account.

Portnoy’s beloved Celtics won it all last year, and the odds of repeating in a league loaded with contenders were always going to be difficult. But on the positive side, as a wise person once said “Flags fly forever.”
Dave Portnoy’s Celtics Face A Fascinating Offseason

Earlier this month, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported that the Celtics were expected to make drastic changes in the offseason with significant luxury tax penalties looming. It remains to be seen what president of basketball operations Brad Stevens will do, but veterans Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday are strong trade candidates given their ages and hefty salaries.
