The Golden State Warriors have continually employed a range of strategies to maintain their competitive edge in the league. A pivotal component of their success has been their formidable defense, significantly influenced by the prowess of star forward Draymond Green.
Green clinched the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2017, coinciding with the Warriors capturing their second NBA championship. Since that achievement, he has yet to reclaim the title. However, in a recent discussion with ESPN, Green expressed that this season could represent his “last best chance” at securing another Defensive Player of the Year Award.
“I spoke about it earlier in the year. I spoke about it last year, about Wemby and Chet. They are. The young guys are great, and what they’re doing is amazing. I do think this is one of the last best chances I have. I think I have put together a good case, and I have six or seven games to continue building that case. Whatever happens, I think I should win it. I wish luck to all the guys in the running because it’s an incredible thing,” Green said.

On January 30, 2025, San Antonio Spurs standout Victor Wembanyama was ruled out for the remainder of the season due to a diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. As a result, Wembanyama will be ineligible for the Defensive Player of the Year (DPOY) award this season, giving Green a fair opportunity to claim the honor.
