D’Angelo Russell is heading to a new destination once again. According to reports, the Dallas Mavericks have secured the veteran point guard on a two-year, $13 million deal. As Russell hit free agency, the Mavericks quickly acted to address a need in their backcourt.
The signing brings both upside and concern for Dallas. Kyrie Irving is expected to miss a significant portion of the 2025-26 season due to a torn ACL. Hence, Russell steps in as an immediate solution. The move offers the Mavericks a seasoned ball handler capable of stabilizing the offense during Irving’s absence.

Russell is entering his 11th NBA season. He gives the Mavericks a proven playmaker to run the offense alongside rookie Cooper Flagg, who is expected to play at point guard.
However, the addition of Russell may not be good news for everyone. Dante Exum might see his role diminished or even face an uncertain future with the franchise. Additionally, any remaining free-agent targets the Mavericks were considering may now be out of reach, as the roster is reportedly full following Russell’s signing.
D’Angelo Russell Eyes Fresh Start In Dallas After Bouncing Between Teams

D’Angelo Russell’s latest stop continues a stretch of movement between teams. During the 2024-25 season, he split time between the Los Angeles Lakers and the Brooklyn Nets. The Lakers traded Russell to Brooklyn ahead of the trade deadline last season.

Russell played in 29 games, averaging 12.4 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game in LA. After joining Brooklyn, he also played 29 games and slightly improved his numbers, posting 12.9 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per contest.
Now with Dallas, the Mavericks will mark Russell’s fourth team in as many seasons. With his new role in place and Irving sidelined, Russell has a clear opportunity to make an impact and reestablish his value as a lead guard in a competitive Western Conference.
