The long-running debate around ring culture in the NBA got a fresh spark, and this time from Hall of Famer Tracy McGrady. In a recent interview on ESPN’s First Take, McGrady raised questions with a bold hypothetical about his career and the value fans place on championships.
McGrady used his career to make the case. He led the league in scoring twice and was a top-six finisher three times. But despite his elite numbers, he never advanced past the first round of the playoffs as the lead star. He believes the lack of a true championship caliber roster, unlike what Kobe Bryant had with Shaquille O’Neal, prevents him from winning a championship.
“Replace me with Kobe Bryant with Shaquille O’Neal, I don’t win a championship?” McGrady asked. While Gilbert Arenas backed him up, saying people did not respect Kobe’s early championships until he won without Shaquille. “The one who’s leading the team is the gold member. That ring counts. The second option’s ring has not been respected in history. Kobe had three rings, and he was treated like a sidekick,” Arenas added. His point was clear: some titles get more respect than others.

Tracy McGrady didn’t hesitate on First Take 🗣️
He believes he could’ve done what Kobe did…if he had Shaq.
And the numbers back it up:

McGrady’s words struck a chord with fans and players. His numbers were close to Kobe’s in their prime, but he did not get the same help. With dominant support, McGrady’s playoff surge and legacy might make a strong, memorable story that can change the whole scenario entirely.
Tracy McGrady Talks On Kevin Durant Trade

Kevin Durant is likely leaving the Phoenix Suns and has made his next destination list as his top trade choice. NBA analyst Stephen A. Smith thinks Houston is the best fit, praising coach Ima Udoka and the team’s solid setup. Rockets legend Tracy McGrady agreed, saying they need a true scorer.

“Houston’s problem in the playoffs this year was they needed a bona fide scorer,” McGrady said. “I think they have the wrong coaches. When you have three of the best shooters in the league, why don’t you design an offense around three of these guys?” he added further, pointing out their weak area.
McGraddy and Gilber both blamed the sun for not using their talent well. Durant still has a lot in the tank, and Houston could make a suitable fit where he gets the support needed to succeed again.
