Last season, Luka Doncic qualified for a massive five-year, $345 million supermax extension with the Dallas Mavericks. However, the NBA world was stunned when the Mavericks traded him to the Los Angeles Lakers. Now, Doncic has yet to finalize a new deal with his new team.
On Wednesday, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst highlighted the magnitude of Doncic’s pending extension. Windhorst explained that Doncic’s decision will not only impact the Lakers’ plans but could influence the strategy of several teams across the league.
“I think I almost would argue the most important thing in the whole NBA this summer is Luka Doncic, whether he extends or not. Because that frames so much of what the Lakers are going to do and frankly the whole league would do,” Windhorst said.

Doncic will become eligible for a four-year, $228 million extension with the Lakers in August. According to insider Sam Amick, expectations are building that the superstar guard will reach an agreement with Los Angeles sometime next month. Meanwhile, Windhorst emphasized the urgency for the Lakers to secure Doncic’s commitment.
“So, I don’t want to put too much pressure on it, but Lakers really need to get him locked down. Even if it’s just for a couple of years to verify that he’s bought into what they’re doing,” Windhorst added.

The Los Angeles Lakers made a bold move on Wednesday by acquiring Deandre Ayton from the Portland Trail Blazers, signaling a significant upgrade to their frontcourt. According to Dan Woike of The Athletic, Doncic is genuinely excited about the opportunity to share the court with Ayton.
“Ayton and Doncic are both represented by Bill Duffy, the longtime agent who heads WME Basketball. Doncic, according to league sources, is excited about the opportunity to play with Ayton,” Woike wrote.
Both players entered the NBA in 2018 and have shared a parallel journey of high expectations and early success. The two stars now have a chance to build something special in Los Angeles.
