Jonas Valanciunas is looking to return to Europe instead of staying with the Denver Nuggets. The Nuggets recently agreed to send Dario Saric to the Sacramento Kings in exchange for Valanciunas, which became official on Sunday. But Valanciunas is now planning differently.
Valanciunas averaged 10.4 points and 7.7 rebounds last season in a split with the Washington Wizards and the Sacramento Kings. He started fewer games and remains a strong presence inside. The Nuggets wanted Valanciunas to back up Jokic as part of their offseason changes, including trading Michael Porter Jr. to secure Bruce Brown.
According to Marc Stein, the Veteran Center is in Greece meeting with Panathinaikos Athens, while the Nuggets are still working to complete a trade for him. Valanciunas is serious about returning to Europe, where he started his career. As per Donatas Urbonas’ reports, the 33-year-old expects an offer from Panathinaikos.
Valančiūnas indeed arrived in Greece earlier this weekend to meet with Panathinaikos officials but he cannot sign with the EuroLeague team unless he is released from his NBA contract, which Denver will acquire Sunday from Sacramento in a swap for Dario Šarić. https://t.co/KFxxVQzsKU

If Valanciunas chooses to sign in Greece, he will need a buyout of the two years and $20.4 million left on his NBA contract. For now, the Nuggets have to wait for his next move.

The Nuggets are targeting AI Horford as a potential replacement. According to NBA insider Evan Sidery, the 39-year-old has become a serious contender. Denver has a budget of $14.1 million, a mid-level exception to make the offer.
Horford’s experience, defensive approach, and leadership can strongly impact Denver’s depth, which they needed. If the deal occurs, this could make another push for a deep playoff run.
