
A standout football player is dead on the back of a harrowing shooting incident that took place in Newark, New Jersey, earlier this month. According to an announcement from Irvington High School, Ziyad Cook was killed just before 6:00 p.m. on June 26.
According to reports, Ziyad was one of two teenagers who were shot.
“Ziyad was not just a remarkable athlete; he was an inspiring young man who embodied the spirit of the Irvington High School Blue Knights,” Irvington Schools Superintendent Dr. April Vauss said in a statement on Monday.
Vauss described Cook as an example to his peers, admired for his athleticism and kindness.
“His talent and determination made him a leader among his peers, and he was admired not only for his athletic prowess but also for his kindness and compassion,” she continued.
The Other Teenager Shot Along With Ziyad Cook Is Still In Hospital

According to the Essex County Prosecutor’s office, two juveniles were shot near 227 Brookdale Avenue and were both transported to University Hospital, where Cook was announced dead. The other teenager remains in critical condition.

Police have not disclosed details of the fatal shooting or the motive behind it. As of the time of writing, no arrests or information on suspects had been announced. But the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Homicide Task Force is investigating.
“He had a unique ability to uplift those around him,” Dr. Vauss added. “Ziyad’s legacy will forever be remembered throughout the Irvington school community, and his impact will resonate for generations to come.”
