A high school football player was shot and killed in a tragic incident on Sunday. DeAngelo Miles, a promising player and the captain of the Hansberry College Prep football team, had only just graduated.
He was 17 years old.
According to a report from ABC7, Miles was killed in a shooting on the South Side of Chicago.
Hansberry College Prep principal Kashawndra Wilson called for change as she bemoaned the loss.
“We have to stop losing our young people,” she said. “This amazing young Black boy had unlimited potential that was snatched.”
DeAngelo Miles was honored in a school photo after his graduation.

“Peers loved Deangelo,” she added. “He often would do Tiktoks and interviews of students…because that’s just who he was. He was destined to be on someone’s TV he truly was…smile…heart of gold.”
School Left With Questions After DeAngelo Miles Dies In Tragic Shooting

According to Chicago police, the shooting took place around 3:08 a.m. in the 11900 block of South Wallace Street in West Pullman on Sunday.
The teenager was discovered with a gunshot wound to the head and was later identified at the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office. The motive for the shooting is unknown.
“From our perspective there was no trouble in school, we don’t have any details as to what and why,” Wilson said.
Students and staff of Hansberry College Prep have been making tributes and honoring Miles’ memories.
His killing follows a string of shooting incidents involving young athletes, with both a college basketball star and a college football player getting shot and killed last month.
Our hearts go out to his family.
