
A community is in mourning following the shooting death of 18-year-old college football player Mycheal Edwards-Wallace.
Mycheal, who was entering his freshman year at Newberry College, a Division II school, lost his life in a shooting at an apartment in Kingstryee, South Carolina, on Sunday night.
According to reports, the teenager was one of four victims who were shot on the night and one of two who perished, per Live 5 News WCSC.
“Our hearts go out to his family,” Newberry head coach Todd Knight said in a statement. “It’s such a tragedy for a talented young man to be struck down at a young age.
Knight added that Edwards-Wallace had an excellent character and was a good student with a bright future, stating that “we were really excited to have him as part of our team. He will always be part of our Newberry family.”

Mycheal Edwards-Wallace played on both the offensive and defensive line for Newberry and was an all-state, all-area, and all-region selection.

He was also Newberry’s Male Athlete of the Year and was selected for the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, a competition boasting the best players from North and South Carolina.
The former Kingstree High School lineman was also named the school’s Male Athlete of the Year in his senior year. He participated in the Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas, which features top players from North Carolina and South Carolina.
“Newberry College is mourning the loss of incoming football student-athlete Mycheal Edwards-Wallace,” the school wrote in a statement.
They added:
“The entire Newberry College community extends its deepest condolences to Mycheal’s family, friends, and teammates. We are keeping them in our thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.”
His passing comes just over two months ahead of Newberry beginning its season against UVA Wise in early September.
16-year-old Edwin Cooper also died as a result of the shooting.
No arrests had been made as of this writing, and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division was assisting Kingstree Police in their investigations. They have urged anyone with information to contact them.
