There’s been a development in the Bill Belichick saga at UNC this month amid multiple rumors regarding the new Tar Heels head coach.
Belichick took the job at Chapel Hill late last year, agreeing to a five-year, $50 million deal in December. The deal included a $10 million buyout clause, which many considered an avenue for returning to the NFL should an opportunity arise.
As of Sunday, June 1, the clause had dropped to just $1 million.
“But Belichick negotiated a deal with UNC that meant his $10 million buyout clause dropped to just $ 1 million from June 1,” the Daily Mail reports.
The former New England Patriots head coach was expected to be the most widely sought custodian on the market after leaving the team he had coached for well over two decades at the end of the 2023 season, but saw the coaching cycle end without him getting a job.
He was expected to sign with the Atlanta Falcons. However, the team chose to go in another direction, and it’s since been reported that Patriots owner Robert Kraft discouraged other owners from hiring him.

Belichick is the most successful coach in NFL history, having won six Super Bowls in New England, where he worked from 2000 to 2024. It remains to be seen how his experience and expertise translate to college football.
Should he stick around, which is very likely to be the case, he will take charge of his first game in the NCAA on September 1. In the meantime, his tenure has been marred, so to speak, by his relationship with 24-year0old former cheerleader Jordon Hudson.
Several rumors have surfaced ahead of Belichick’s first game with the Tar Heels. Former ESPN reporter Pablo Torre has made claims of UNC banning Hudson from the football facility, while there are also reports of them being engaged.
The relationship came under significant scrutiny after Hudson interrupted an interview Belichick was having with CBS after questions arose about how they met.
