USC Trojans quarterback Caleb Williams has responded to the comparisons between him and Kansas City Chiefs superstar quarterback Patrick Mahomes.
Well-known quarterbacks guru Tom House made headlines recently when he said that Williams “is the second coming of Pat Mahomes.” That’s obviously very high praise considering that Mahomes is widely regarded as the best quarterback in the NFL.
Williams is one of four candidates for the Heisman Trophy, along with Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud, TCU signal-caller Max Duggan and Georgia QB Stetson Bennett.
Zach Gelb of CBS Sports Radio (h/t Zach Koons of Sports Illustrated) asked Williams about House’s statement. The Heisman Trophy finalist confidently claimed that though Mahomes is “special”, the USC star believes he can do anything the 2018 league MVP does:
“It’s pretty cool, I’d say, just because everybody watches Patrick and sees all the cool things he can do I always said even in high school that I don’t think there’s anything—obviously, he’s special, but I don’t think there’s anything that I can’t do that he’s doing out there.”

Unlike Williams, Mahomes wasn’t exactly a can’t-miss prospect heading into the 2017 NFL Draft. His skill set was undeniable, but there were questions about how it would translate over to the NFL level.
Mahomes watched behind veteran Pro Bowler Alex Smith in his rookie 2017 season before taking over the starting gig in 2018. And the rest, as they say, is history.
The Chiefs have played in four straight AFC Championship Games at home under Mahomes’ guidance, winning the 2019 and 2020 contests. They also defeated the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 54 to end a half-century championship drought.
It’s early, but Williams is already a heavy favorite to be the first overall of the 2024 NFL Draft. He had a tremendous first season under new head coach Lincoln Riley, completing 66.1 percent of pass attempts for 4,075 yards, 37 touchdowns and four interceptions to go along with 372 rushing yards and 10 rushing scores.
The Trojans will try to end the 2022 season on a positive note when they play No. 16 ranked Tulane in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 2.WANT MORE FROM TOTALPROSPORTS? FOLLOW US ON GOOGLE NEWS.
