South Dakota State is mourning running back Nate White following his tragic passing this week.
White, who was only 20, was found unresponsive in bed on Wednesday morning. His cause of death has not been disclosed, with Brookings police still investigating the circumstances.
“Jackrabbit football is a brotherhood and today we are all hurting with the shocking news of the loss of Nate White,” South Dakota State head coach Dan Jackson said in a statement.
According to reports, White’s roommate called police and said he was unresponsive in bed and wasn’t breathing.
The running back had transferred to South Dakota State from Wisconsin in January.
“News of Nate White’s tragic passing has been sad and difficult to comprehend for all of our Wisconsin Badger football family,” Wisconsin head coach Luke Fickell said.

“We remember Nate as a friend and teammate and we stand in support of Nate’s family and loved ones,” Fickell added.
Nate White Was Tipped To Do Great Things

Nate White, a three-star prospect out of Milwaukee, was originally a wide receiver but converted to running back after seeing little playing time as a wideout. He was tipped to have a significant role in the Jackrabbits’ offense – sadly, he has been robbed of the opportunity to prove his worth.
White was the No. 48 running back in the nation and the top overall recruit from Wisconsin. He had several offers before committing to the Badgers, with Iowa State, Vanderbilt, Purdue, Minnesota, and Kansas all seeking his services.
The running back was a second-team All-State selection by the Associated Press after rushing for 1,345 yards and 26 touchdowns in 2022. He also ran for 1,163 yards and 22 touchdowns in nine junior appearances.
Our thoughts are with his family while they navigate this difficult time.
