Colorado head coach Deion Sanders has explained the program’s decision to honor his son, Shedeur Sanders, and former teammate Travis Hunter by retiring their numbers as quickly as it has.
The two players are now NFL-bound after two seasons with the Buffaloes, one of which went very well.
They have both seen their jersey numbers retired by Colorado four months after their Bowl game appearance against BYU, with the school making it official in a ceremony on Saturday.
The decision has been controversial, with many slamming it. Critics are pointing out that Shedeur and Travis have not done more for the Buffs than some of Boulder’s best-ever players, whose numbers aren’t retired, while suggesting that Coach Prime orchestrated it all.
There were also complaints over how quickly the school retired the Nos. 2 and 12, but Prime insisted there’s nothing wrong with honoring Shedeur and Travis while they could still enjoy it, given that it was going to happen eventually anyway, according to him.
“I’m not gonna wait 20 years down the street, then bring you back when you’re limping, you can barely walk, or because some tragedy happens to recognize your greatness and what you contributed to this program,” he said.

Deion Sanders Says We’re In A “Now Generation”

Sanders added that the criticism was inevitable and expected, considering the timing of it all, but pointed out that this is a generation that wants everything now.
“The time frame, nobody’s going to be happy with. Somebody’s always going to have something to say,” he remarked. “But the way we are right now, we’re a ‘now’ generation. You guys are ‘now’ people and this is a ‘now’ time. And those guys deserve what they deserve right now. So I’m proud of them.”
Meanwhile, Shedeur Sanders and Travis Hunter will soon learn their futures, with the NFL Draft set for this Thursday.
