Hawaii outfielder Jared Quandt experienced a near-catastrophic incident in the 13th inning against UC Davis.
The crucial part came in the bottom of the 13th with Quandt, a fifth-year senior, on third base after a leadoff walk, only to face unusual chaos as the team battled with two outs and the bases loaded. What followed was a series of events that had fans on the edge of their seats.
As freshman catcher David Vergel de Dios stepped up to bat, the stakes were high. With the bases loaded and two strikes against him, Quandt made the decision to break for home as Vergel de Dios swung at a pitch.

Vergel de Dios fouled off the ball, causing the bat to swing dangerously close to Quandt’s head. The scenario was one of high tension; not only was Quandt risking a head-on collision with the bat, but he was also inches away from being struck by the ball itself.
The risky move caught the attention of the umpire who, amidst the chaos, called a walk-off balk against the U.C. Davis pitcher. And awarded Quandt home plate and scored the decisive run.
