The statue of Mario Lemieux outside Pittsburgh’s PPG Paints Arena was spray-painted and vandalized terribly as people marched through the city.
Pittsburgh Police initially said protests were peaceful, but things took a drastic turn for the worst as more and more people continued to show up.
Lemieux had a hand in all five of the Penguins’ Stanley Cup titles and basically saved hockey in Pittsburgh by buying a bankrupt franchise (2009, 2016, 2017). He’s the only person in NHL history to have his name on the Stanley Cup both as a player and an owner.
Protests across the United States started this week after video surfaced online showing a Minneapolis cop with his knee on the neck of George Floyd for 8 minutes and ultimately lost his life as a result.
Floyd’s death was the latest example of police action leading to the death of an unarmed black person.
