When Tennessee fan Josh Sullivan finally reunited with his family after nearly a week held hostage in South Africa, most expected tears, relief, and a long road to recovery.
But Sullivan had other priorities. As he embraced loved ones for the first time, his mind immediately drifted back to something deeply familiar: college football.
That’s right. Before unpacking the trauma of his international ordeal, Sullivan wanted the latest on his beloved Tennessee Volunteers. According to those closest to him, the first major topic of conversation wasn’t about his rescue. It was about Nico Iamaleava’s departure from the team.
Sullivan’s First Concern Isn’t Expected

Sullivan, a diehard Vols fan and pastor at Fellowship Baptist Church in Maryville, wasted no time diving into 2025 college football talk. As he settled back into his East Tennessee home, he quickly learned that Tennessee had parted ways with highly touted quarterback Nico Iamaleava.
“And they said, well, you know, Nico left, didn’t you?” said Pastor Tom Hatley, speaking to WVLT. “His wife told me last night that the biggest conversation they’ve had has been about Nico. Hey, the boy was raised in East Tennessee, what can I tell you?”
Authorities in South Africa, including the Anti-Gang Unit and Serious Organized Crime Unit, played a crucial role in securing Sullivan’s release. His safe return brought immense relief to his community. But the immediate pivot to football talk shows just how deep the SEC’s grip runs in the South.

Hatley is now calling on the University of Tennessee to do something special for Sullivan. A game-day invite, a chance to run through the “T,” maybe even a shoutout from head coach Josh Heupel.
“If Josh Heupel is listening to me or the athletic director, Danny White, let’s get this man in to see the team, let’s let him run through the T, let’s do something because he deserves it,” Hatley said.
Sullivan’s story is more than just a wild headline. It’s a reminder of the unshakable bond many fans have with their teams. Even in the face of fear, uncertainty, and distance, loyalty doesn’t waver.
