It was rumored that Tennessee and UCLA could be involved in a trade of sorts following Nico Iamaleava’s departure earlier this month.
The Volunteers were in need of a quarterback, with the five-star QB having transferred to the Bruins after a NIL standoff that ensured he’ll get less money instead of more. Given the timing of it all, there was not much time to get a replacement for the starter, leading to claims that the move could fashion the first college football trade.
With the Bruins having signed Nico, the quarterback they brought in as their starter just four months ago is off.
Joey Aguilar had already agreed NIL terms with the school, which could still be on the hook for his $1 million salary. But they could be given a break amid the latest developments.
Nico Iamaleava’s Departure Could Allow Tennessee To Get A QB They Want At A Discounted Price

Aguilar jumped back in the portal and reportedly spoke to Tennessee on Monday, with reports claiming that there was strong mutual interest between the parties.
ESPN’s Chris Low reported that Vols head coach Josh Heupel is high on Aguilar, whom he believes possesses the traits he wants for the position and has since disclosed that the deal is done.

“The QB trade is complete. Joey Aguilar plans to sign with Tennessee after transferring to UCLA from App. State in the winter portal, sources tell ESPN. He trades places with Nico Iamaleava, who transferred from Tennessee to UCLA in the current portal. Back to business as usual.”
That the Vols would have still had $2 million to spend on a quarterback makes this all the more intriguing, as it’s what they had agreed to pay Nico Iamaleava in 2025. Should they take up Joey Aguilar’s contract, it would leave them with an extra million.
Of course, there’s always the possibility of the latter negotiating fresh terms, so we’ll just have to wait on the details.
