What was supposed to be a routine weekend for Texas football turned into a full-blown controversy after a freshman lineman admitted to taking two recruits to a strip club during their campus visit. The fallout started with a traffic stop and ended with headlines that could spell trouble for both the player involved and the program.
Nick Brooks, a highly-touted freshman offensive lineman for the Texas Longhorns, found himself in legal hot water after Austin police arrested him early Sunday morning.
According to FOX 7 Austin, officers pulled Brooks over for driving 47 in a 30-mile-per-hour zone. The traffic stop quickly escalated when Brooks reportedly admitted to smoking marijuana before getting behind the wheel.
Night Out Raises Bigger Questions

Brooks didn’t just talk about the weed. He also told officers he had taken two prospective players to a 21-and-up club, adding that the venue “makes exceptions” for Texas football players. That club, according to his own words, was a strip club. Brooks’ honesty might work in his favor in court, but it opened a can of worms for Texas football, especially considering the players he brought along were not yet on the team.

Police noted that Brooks had noticeable body tremors during a field sobriety test and struggled to stand on one leg. He admitted to hitting a marijuana vape pen three times and smoking a blunt earlier in the evening. Although a breathalyzer test showed no alcohol in his system, officers arrested him on suspicion of driving while intoxicated.

Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian addressed the situation briefly in a statement through FOX 7 Austin, saying, “We’re aware of the situation with Nick Brooks, have talked with him and are gathering information. We will continue to monitor the legal process and address this situation within the team at the appropriate time.”
Brooks, who signed with Texas in December and enrolled in January, came in as one of the top offensive linemen in the 2025 recruiting class. 247Sports ranked him No. 238 nationally and No. 25 among offensive tackles.
The situation has sparked plenty of online reaction. One user wrote, “Buddy went from a 1 game suspension to possibly kicked off the team.” Now, the focus shifts to how the university handles what started as a night out and ended as a potential violation of recruiting ethics, a serious hit to a young player’s future.
