Wofford’s Kyler Filewich has a free throw problem, and everyone knows it. The 6-foot-9, 250-pound senior plays a crucial role for the Terriers, averaging 11.9 points, 9.5 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game. But at the free throw line, he is a liability. His struggles reached such a point this season that Wofford’s coaching staff suggested a drastic change: underhand shooting.
Unfortunately, the switch to the so-called “granny-style” approach hasn’t helped much. His motion remains erratic, and his numbers have barely improved. Opponents have taken notice, and during the SoCon Tournament on Sunday, VMI’s bench openly mocked him after an airball while trailing by 15 points in the second half.
Kyler Filewich’s Free Throw Woes

Over the last two seasons, Filewich has made less than 32% of his free throws. His inconsistency has been glaring, with recent games highlighting his struggles. Against Chattanooga, he failed to convert either of his attempts. On the road at Mercer, he managed one make on two tries. His best showing came at Citadel, where he hit four of six, followed by a 6-for-10 performance against Samford. However, those flashes of competence were overshadowed by disastrous outings, including a 0-for-3 night at VMI, a 1-for-4 game against ETSU, and another rough 1-for-5 performance in a second matchup with ETSU.
The SoCon Tournament matchup against VMI was no different. Kyler Filewich went 1-for-4 at the stripe while posting a respectable 13 points on 6-of-12 shooting. But his free throw form became a spectacle when he launched a particularly ugly attempt. The Keydets’ bench erupted in laughter, visibly taunting the Wofford center in a moment that encapsulated both his struggles and their frustration in a lopsided loss.
Filewich likely understands the humor in his situation. But in a tournament game with their season on the line, VMI’s animated reaction was a bad look. Wofford, meanwhile, moves on with a shot at March Madness- and Filewich will have to hope his free throw luck changes when it matters most.
