NFL fans are in an uproar over the league’s announcement regarding compensatory picks for this year’s draft as the 49ers have been awarded seven selections.
The Niners will be heading into draft weekend with three third-rounders, the most among NFL teams. And it appears social media does not agree that they’re deserved.

It’s worth noting that all three of the Niners’ third-round picks are part of the “special compensatory selection” as teams hired Robert Saleh, DeMeco Ryans, and Mike McDaniel as head coaches.
Some fans are well aware of the process but it might be that the majority are not. According to the rules, compensatory picks are awarded to teams that lose key free agents during the prior offseason.
The word “key” there is determined by a formula based on salary, playing time, and postseason awards. So, should a team lose more free agents than it acquires, the league will consider the mismatch for draft compensation as high as the latter picks of the third round.
The league also awards compensatory picks to teams who previously employed a minority who has since been appointed as a head coach or primary football executive.
As for this year’s draft, it’s set to begin on Thursday, April 27, and will run through Saturday, April 29.
