The NFL offseason never disappoints when it comes to surprises, and this year is shaping up to be a wild one. With Aaron Rodgers officially out in New York, the Los Angeles Rams unsure about Matthew Stafford’s future, and the New York Giants in desperate need of a quarterback, a massive shake-up could be on the table.
Giants Eyeing Matthew Stafford?
Fox Sports’ Colin Cowherd recently speculated that the Rams could trade Matthew Stafford to the Giants for the third overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. This deal would give the Rams valuable draft capital while providing the Giants with a proven veteran quarterback.
Stafford, 37, led the Rams to a 10-7 record and an NFC West title last season, throwing for 3,762 yards, 20 touchdowns, and eight interceptions with a 65.8% completion rate. Meanwhile, the Giants struggled, finishing 3-14 with one of the league’s worst offenses- ranking 23rd in rushing (104.9 yards per game), 28th in passing (189.9 yards per game), 30th in total yards (294.8 per game), and 31st in points (16.1 per game).

If traded, Matthew Stafford would join an offense with young playmakers like rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers (1,204 yards, seven touchdowns), wide receiver Wan’Dale Robinson (93 receptions), and running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. (839 rushing yards, five touchdowns).
However, giving up the No. 3 pick for a 37-year-old quarterback is a tough call. The Giants could draft Shedeur Sanders, Cam Ward, or Travis Hunter or sign a cheaper stopgap like Carson Wentz, Jameis Winston, or Jacoby Brissett.
Rams’ Plan: Rodgers As A Short-Term Fix?
For the Rams, trading Matthew Stafford would not only free up his massive contract but also set the stage for a potential run at Aaron Rodgers. The four-time MVP barely saw the field for the Jets last season due to a torn Achilles, but in his last full season, he still showed signs of elite play.

Rodgers to the Rams makes sense for several reasons. He has a history with offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur, who worked under his brother Matt LaFleur in Green Bay. The Rams also have a stable offensive line, a strong defense, and one of the league’s brightest offensive minds in head coach Sean McVay. That’s a stark contrast to the dysfunction Rodgers experienced in New York.

In his most recent full season, Rodgers threw for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions with a 63.0% completion rate, even with a “third-tier coaching staff,” as Cowherd put it. Now, imagine him working under McVay with weapons like star wide receiver Puka Nacua and tight ends Tyler Higbee and Colby Parkinson. The Rams, who ranked 10th in passing yards (227.5 per game) and 15th in total yards (331.4 per game) last season, could be a perfect fit for Rodgers to make one last Super Bowl push.

Cap Space And Draft Strategy
Financially, the Rams are projected to have around $38.3 million in cap space, which could increase if they trade Stafford and potentially move on from veteran wide receiver Cooper Kupp, who reportedly wants out. Additionally, the Rams hold the No. 26 pick in the 2025 draft and could acquire multiple picks from the Giants in a Matthew Stafford deal.
Cowherd also suggests that the Rams would use the Giants’ No. 3 pick to trade down and acquire more draft capital. The reasoning? LA might be looking ahead to the 2026 NFL Draft, where quarterbacks like LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier, Georgia’s Carson Beck, and Penn State’s Drew Allar could be prime targets for a long-term solution at the position.
A Franchise-Altering Deal?
If this scenario unfolds, it would drastically reshape the NFC. The Giants would finally get a reliable quarterback in Matthew Stafford, giving head coach Brian Daboll and GM Joe Schoen a better chance of keeping their jobs. Meanwhile, the Rams would stay competitive with a short-term upgrade in Rodgers while setting themselves up for a future franchise quarterback.

Of course, there are risks. The Giants might hesitate to part with a high draft pick for a veteran quarterback, and Rodgers has always been unpredictable. But if both teams leap, this could be one of the biggest moves of the offseason- one that could shake up the league for years to come.
