Since his death details have since emerged in what happened that led to lost of his life.
Court documents revealed police officers were called to Zimmer’s house after they received reports the coach “had passed out from drinking,” according to the Star Tribune. They found him unconscious with bruising and blood pooling around his eye.
Mendota Heights Capt. Wayne Wegener said there was no suspicion of foul play.
An official cause of death has not yet been released.
Bengals owner Mike Brown released a statement honoring the coach and his family:
“Our organization has had the privilege of working with the Zimmer family for 15 years. We have the highest regard for Mike and Adam, and we are incredibly saddened by this tragic news. Mike and Adam were more than just coaches for us — they were friends. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Zimmer family at this time.”
Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins also said on social media that he was “deeply saddened” by the news, and called Adam Zimmer a “tremendous coach & person.”
The coach spent time with the Vikings, Bengals, and the New Orleans Saints, with whom he won a Super Bowl. Zimmer had been working for the Bengals, but from home.
The Bengals have gone 1-1 in the wake of their former coach’s passing.
