Mike McDaniel would nothing more than to just enjoy being a head coach in the National Football League, but his hirng came during a time where Brian Flores filed a lawsuit that accused the NFL and multiple teams of racist actions during their hiring process.
The New Dolphins head coach is a minority and it matters for several reasons, with one of them being the NFL has specific rules about minority coaches, including that the 49ers will receive two third-round draft picks for helping to develop a minority assistant coach to the point where another team hired him to be its head coach.
McDaniel, however, to many people looks White. It has been a topic of discussion since the announcement.
For McDaniel himself, he wishes people would just identify him as human. He said he has seen all of the talk about him “identifying as multiracial” because his father is black and mother is white.
“It’s been very odd, to tell you the truth. This idea of ‘identifying’ as something. I think people identify me as something but I identify as a human being,” McDaniels said.
“And my Dad’s black. So, whatever you want to call it — I know there’s a lot of people with a shared experience but it doesn’t make… it’s weird that it comes up because I’ve just tried to be a good person and I think my background has opened my eyes a little bit,” McDaniel added.
“I don’t have any real experience with racism… but I know my Mom experienced it when she married my Dad. I know my Dad experienced it and that’s in my family. I guess that makes me a human being that can identify with other people’s problems,” the 38-year-old first-time head coach concluded.
Clearly, he would rather just focus on football.WANT MORE FROM TOTALPROSPORTS? FOLLOW US ON GOOGLE NEWS.
