Faking someone’s death just to get a couple extra app downloads for your online betting company?
Yeah, it doesn’t get much lower than that. For those of you who are still catching up, earlier this morning footage was released of what appeared to be former New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees being struck by lightning while filming a promotion for Pointsbet Sportsbook in Venezuela.
Many on social media grew worried for the future Hall of Fame quarterback, as Pointsbet released the following statement:
As it turns out, it was all part of their marketing ploy, as Brees himself released a video shortly after, telling his fans that he’s okay and that Pointsbet is giving away free “lightning bets” to all customers this weekend.
Seriously, Pointsbet? You had to fake the death of one of the most beloved quarterbacks in NFL history, just to get an extra couple of signups? Are times that tough at the Pointsbet Sportsbook these days?
Needless to say, NFL fans on Twitter were not impressed. Many took to the app to voice their displeasure with Pointsbet’s tasteless promo.
