The 2025 NFL draft is right around the corner, and unflattering things are still being said about Shedeur Sanders.
ESPN’s Tim Hasselbeck decided to add his thoughts on the former Colorado quarterback.
After an impressive college football career from a statistical standpoint, there is a split in the media about what kind of NFL quarterback Sanders can be.
Hasselbeck spoke out with a very unflattering comparison of Sanders ahead of the draft.
The ESPN NFL analyst and former quarterback raised eyebrows when he said his “comp” of NFL quarterback prospect Shedeur Sanders of Colorado has been long-time Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton, who started five games last season for the Carolina Panthers.
“He is smart. He knows how to play the position,” Hasselbeck said of Sanders.
“I think where it gets really tricky is like you’re talking about rarified air when you’re talking about drafting a guy at the top of the draft. Look, he just is not as physically talented as you would like to see. I mean, it sounds crazy, considering he’s Deion Sanders’ son. But that’s just the case. My comp on Shedeur Sanders has kind of been in that like Andy Dalton range.
People have compared him to Kirk Cousins. Those are compliments. Both of those guys have thrown for over 250 touchdowns through their NFL careers. Both of those guys have led teams to the playoffs. But when you’re talking about the top half of Round 1 (of the NFL draft), you’re looking for elite traits. And he just doesn’t have those. Look, you’re gonna have to beat the market at quarterback. So you’re gonna have to draft a rookie quarterback at some point because of what’s happened with the Deshaun Watson deal.”

Ouch.
Since 2019, Dalton’s final season with the Bengals, he has played for the Dallas Cowboys, Chicago Bears, New Orleans Saints, and Carolina.
In 14 NFL seasons, Dalton has passed for 39,500 yards with 253 touchdown passes.
Solid career, but Sanders would love to have something better.
Who Will Draft Shedeur Sanders?
