Dan Campbell, born in Clifton, Texas, played as a tailback and tight end at Glen Rose High School. His senior year included 7 catches for 68 yards, a touchdown, and 3 special teams tackles.
Campbell was drafted by the New York Giants in the third round of the 1999 NFL Draft. He became the team’s starting tight end in 2001, primarily as a blocker. In 2003, he joined the Dallas Cowboys, where he mentored Jason Witten and played a key blocking role. Injuries limited his 2004 season, but he returned in 2005 to start 12 games in a two-tight end system.
In 2006, Campbell signed with the Detroit Lions, posting career-best receiving stats. However, injuries placed him on injured reserve in both 2007 and 2008, leading to his release in 2009. He later signed with the New Orleans Saints but suffered an MCL injury in training camp, spending the 2009 season on injured reserve.
