Cut day around the NFL can be brutal for young players, but it can be really bad for veterans as they continue to get older.
While Jaylon Smith has impressed since signing with the Saints earlier this month, he will not be part of the team’s 53-man roster today.
The former Dallas Cowboys linebacker was released.
Smith was trending in the right direction following the final preseason game. Smith tied with rookie linebacker Nephi Sewell for a team-high five tackles Sunday, including a team-high two tackles for loss.
Smith had made a strong impression in his short time in New Orleans but not enough to make the initial 53-man roster.
It’s still possible the Saints bring him back as he is eligible for a practice squad spot and does not have to clear waivers.
The 28-year-old was a second-round pick by the Cowboys out of Notre Dame in the 2016 NFL Draft. The Cowboys made the decision to release Smith during the 2021 season.
In 2022, Smith appeared in 13 games for the Giants, recording 88 total tackles, three tackles for loss, one sack and one fumble recovery.
