Patrick Mahomes, a year removed from his first league MVP award and just four months after leading the Chiefs to victory in Super Bowl LIV, cashed in big time on Monday when he inked a 10-year extension that is worth $477 million (and can reach up to $503 million) with a $140 million injury guarantee.
Mahomes’ 10-year extension will be guided by a mechanism that ensures the quarterback’s annual salary never drops below certain cap thresholds.
The contract had other players commenting about it, and that included JJ Watt.
The Houston Texans star defensive end sent a message to his quarterback Deshaun Watson following the Mahomes’ extension news.
Watson responded to the contract soon after:
Watson and the Texans fell to Mahomes and the Chiefs in the AFC Divisional Round. The Chiefs would go on to defeat the Titans and then the 49ers in the Super Bowl.
