The New England Patriots and quarterback Mac Jones reportedly aren’t seeing eye-to-eye on how they should handle his high ankle sprain.
Jones suffered the injury late in the Patriots’ Week 3 home loss to the Baltimore Ravens. On Monday, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that Jones’ ankle sprain is “pretty severe”, and that he’s unlikely to play in Week 4 against the Green Bay Packers.
In an update, James Stewart of 98.5 The Sports Hub reported on Monday evening that Jones and the Pats “are at a disagreement” over how to proceed.
According to Stewart, the team prefers that Jones returns “as soon as possible”, whereas Jones would rather “proceed with caution” and get a second opinion.
Jones suffered the injury after taking a hit from Ravens defensive tackle Calais Campbell. Baltimore won 37-26 to move to 2-1 on the year, while the Patriots’ defeat dropped them to 1-2 through three weeks for the second consecutive year.
With Jones likely to miss time, the Patriots will most likely go with veteran backup Brian Hoyer for the Week 4 showdown against Green Bay. The only other quarterback on the depth chart is rookie Bailey Zappe, whom New England drafted in the fourth round at 137 overall.
After visiting the 2-1 Packers, the Patriots will return home for a showdown against the Detroit Lions in Week 5. New England will hit the road again for a meeting with the Cleveland Browns, before returning to Gillette Stadium in Week 7 for a home tilt against the Chicago Bears.
For now, the Patriots and their fans can only hold their breath and hope that the 2021 first-round pick returns sooner rather than later.
