Back in 2021, Tom Brady had social media buzzing when he appeared on The Shop and dropped this juicy little nugget regarding his first-ever trip into free agency.
“One of the teams, they weren’t interested at the very end,” Brady said. “I was thinking, you’re sticking with that motherf–ker?”
The immediate favorite for the role of unnamed “motherf–ker” became 49ers quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo. However, that changed quickly this weekend when Dana White’s comments from the first-ever UFC “GronkCast” claimed that Brady to the Raiders was almost a done deal before coach Jon Gruden blew it up, are prompting many to conclude it was indeed Carr.
According to one Raiders reporter, this indeed happened.
“There is some truth to this amid the exaggeration. I wrote then about the Raiders’ interest, and Gruden ultimately did decide he didn’t want to pay an aging Brady all that money,” Vic Tafur tweeted.
White was convinced to tell the story by Rob Gronkowski during the UFC with the Gronks broadcast on ESPN and ESPN+ for UFC 278 on Saturday night.
“I worked to put that deal together for Brady and Gronk to come to the Raiders,” White said. “It was almost a done deal. And at the last minute, Gruden blew the deal up and said that he didn’t want him and all hell broke loose, man. It was crazy.
“And Brady was already looking at houses. It wasn’t said yet that Gronk was going to be coming. So Las Vegas would have had Brady and Gronk the year that the Bucs won the Super Bowl except Gruden blew the deal up.”
White added that “there’s so much story that goes with this behind the scenes.”
