
Chicago Bears icon and Super Bowl 20 champion Steve McMichael, who’s been battling amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) for four years, is moving to hospice care.
According to Anna Roberts of WGN News, McMichael will be moved to a hospice care facility after being treated in the ICU on a ventilator. McMichael, 67, went public with his ALS diagnosis in April 2021.
When a person is moved to a hospice care facility, it usually means that they’re nearing death. The focus in hospice care is to provide patients with the best possible quality of life before they pass.
Steve McMichael has been married to Misty McMichael since 2001. They had their only child, a daughter named Macy Dale, in 2008. McMichael was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame last year but was unable to attend the ceremony because of his condition.
In a heartwarming moment, Steve’s sister, Kathy, delivered his Hall of Fame speech at the 2024 ceremony. Several of McMichael’s teammates from the legendary ’85 Super Bowl championship team were at his home to unveil his Canton bust:
Steve McMichael turned pro in 1980 after being drafted in the third round (73rd overall) by the New England Patriots. He signed with the Bears in 1981 free agency and emerged as a game-changer on their star-studded defense, leading the franchise to its only Super Bowl title in 1985.

McMichael spent his final NFL season with the Green Bay Packers in 1994 before retiring. “Mongo” later entered a career in professional wrestling, working with the Four Horsemen faction in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) while also performing commentary for the promotion.

McMichael racked up 92.5 sacks and 12 forced fumbles during his 13 seasons with the Bears, including a career-high 11.5 sacks in the 1988 season. McMichael was a two-time Pro Bowler, two-time First-team All-Pro and three-time Second-team All-Pro in his Hall of Fame career.
