The New Orleans Saints struggled at the quarterback position, but Winston didn’t really see the field as he ended the year as Andy Dalton’s backup. Winston is now saying he has one year remaining on his contract. But will the Saints keep him?
A new report says the Saints will likely release the former Florida State star with a post-June 1 designation, which could save them upwards of $12 million.
“Jameis Winston’s time with the #Saints’ is likely up.’, according to @LarryHolder,” tweeted Kleiman. “The #Saints can save $12.8 million by releasing him with a post-June 1 designation. He ended the 2022 season as Andy Dalton’s backup.”
The Saints are the one team known to be interested in Derek Carr after his release from the Las Vegas Raiders. New Orleans has been in search of answers at quarterback since the retirement of future Hall of Famer Drew Brees at the end of the 2020 season.
After five seasons in Tampa, the Bucs parted ways with Winston and brought in Tom Brady. Winston signed with New Orleans to serve as Brees’ backup.
He attempted just 11 passes in 2020, but the team still brought him back. He started the first seven games of the 2021 season, going 5-2 and throwing for 1,170 yards, 14 touchdowns and three interceptions. A torn ACL would cut his year short.
After signing a two-year deal, he was back in time for the 2022 season, as he went 1-2 in starting the first three games while completing 63.5 percent of his passes for 858 yards, four touchdowns and five interceptions. A back injury caused Winston to miss some time, and the team just decided to stick with Dalton.
The Saints went 7-10 and missed the playoffs.
