New Orleans Saints quarterback Derek Carr has surprisingly announced his retirement from football.
A four-time Pro Bowler, Carr joined the Saints in 2023 after playing with the Las Vegas Raiders for nine seasons.
He has chosen to retire due to a serious shoulder injury sustained in March, which would have required surgery and left him sidelined for the entire 2025 season.
The quarterback has revealed that, after praying about the situation and discussing it with his wife, he decided that retirement would be best for both his family and the Saints organization.
“Upon reflection of prayer, and in discussion with Heather, I’ve decided to retire from the National Football League,” he said in a statement.
Carr added:
“For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience. It’s difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials and especially the fans who made this journey so special. Your unwavering support has meant the world to us.”

Carr threw for career totals of 41,245 yards, 257 TDS, and 112 interceptions. His decision to retire has left second-round rookie QB Tyler Shough with a more straightforward path to the starting job.
