Despite being expected to land in a heavy-weight NFL Draft, Shedeur Sanders’ struggle is far from over.
As many as six teams passed on him during the first round of the draft.
Shedeur Sanders initially had high expectations for his NFL Draft prospects, with many believing he could be a top-10 pick. However, this did not come to pass, as no team selected in the early rounds of the draft.
Specifically, there was substantial buzz around the New York Giants potentially picking him at No. 3 overall. But they chose Abdul Carter from Penn State instead.
The New Orleans Saints, another team linked to Sanders, opted for Texas offensive tackle Kelvin Banks at No. 9. The Pittsburgh Steelers had the chance to select him at No. 21 but decided to go with Derrick Harmon from Oregon instead.

While he lost something he never had in the first place, Shedeur Sanders is remaining optimistic about his near future.
The talented quarterback from Colorado football found himself without a team after the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. Once in the conversation as a potential No. 1 pick, it was surprising to see him still on the board after 32 selections were made.
However, Coach Prime’s son is keeping his head down and morals high.
“I don’t feel like this happened for no reason. All this is, of course, fuel to the fire,” he said.
It’s hard not to feel a bit of frustration for Sanders, especially after his strong 2024 season and all the buzz that surrounded him leading up to the draft. But perhaps not being picked in the first round could turn out to be a blessing in disguise for his future in the NFL.
In the months leading up to the draft, Sanders kept a pretty low profile. He skipped the East-West Shrine Bowl and didn’t participate in workouts at the NFL Scouting Combine. He only made an appearance at one mandatory press conference. With such limited visibility, it wasn’t completely clear how teams were viewing him.
