The Dallas Cowboys reportedly added some youth to their quarterback room by acquiring second-year signal-caller Joe Milton from the New England Patriots.
The Cowboys sent a fifth-round draft pick to the Patriots in exchange for Milton and a seventh-round pick.
Mark Daniels and Karen Guregian of MassLive reported 24 hours before that the Patriots had “received multiple trade inquiries” for Milton.
They added that “a source close to the quarterback said Milton would prefer to be on a roster that best gives him a chance to compete for the starting job.”
Now, a new report states why the Patriots had to get rid of Joe Milton.
“I’m told Milton was a Jerod Mayo guy, and the Patriots wanted to avoid another Mac Jones/Bailey Zappe situation.”

In the offseason of 2024, the New England Patriots traded quarterback Mac Jones to the Jacksonville Jaguars. It seems he and Bailey Zappe were not too keen on each other, as Zappe “liked” a news piece on the trade.
The relationship between Jones and Zappe was reportedly rocky behind the scenes. NFL insider Albert Breer even went as far as saying things got so toxic between them at one point that Zappe watched film in the wide receivers’ room.
It seems the Patriots did not want the same between Joe Milton and Drake Maye.
NFL Insider Gives His Take On Joe Milton Being Traded

Dallas traded for second-year quarterback Joe Milton III from the Patriots.
Milton, a sixth-round pick out of Tennessee in last year’s NFL draft, had been at the center of trade buzz for much of the offseason.
Earlier this week, it was reported New England had received “multiple trade inquiries” about the 25-year-old quarterback.
Shortly after news of the trade was announced, the Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed explained why the Patriots had moved on from him.
“People who worked with Milton last season didn’t believe he would be an ideal backup quarterback for Drake Maye,” Kyed posted to X.
“Milton sees himself as a potential starter and doesn’t have the league experience of a Jacoby Brissett or Joshua Dobbs. I don’t think Milton would have created issues, but it’s a new regime, and the Patriots were able to flip him for a higher pick.”
