Since failing to close the deal on a blockbuster trade for Matthew Stafford, the New York Giants have been linked to other big-name signal-callers like Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, and Sam Darnold.
The Giants were said to be pursuing a trade for Stafford amid a contract dispute with the Los Angeles Rams. However, the NFC West champions reached an agreement on a restructured deal with the Super Bowl-winning QB, keeping him in La La Land for at least another season.
According to a report from Connor Hughes of SNY, sources believe that the Giants landing Russell Wilson is “the most likely outcome.” Wilson is a pending free agent and unlikely to re-sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers following a dismal end to the 2024 season.
Hughes heard that Aaron Rodgers has merely been a “discussion” for the Giants, with the New York Jets set to release the four-time MVP from his contract. Hughes was also told that if a team were to acquire the No. 1 pick from the Tennessee Titans, it would be used on Miami quarterback Cam Ward:
“As for the rookies: I couldn’t find anyone affiliated with a team who had Shedeur Sanders ranked ahead of Cam Ward. A couple had others as the No. 2 QB in this class. All felt any trade to No. 1 is for one player: Ward. That doesn’t mean the Giants won’t take Sanders. They’d just be on an island with their evaluation. That also doesn’t really matter as long as they end up right.”
The Giants have the No. 3 selection, with the Titans and Cleveland Browns (No. 2) picking before them.
The #Giants took their big swing on Matt Stafford. That failed. Now multiple sources expect them to concentrate their efforts on getting the No. 1 pick from Tennessee, and pairing the QB they select with a veteran.

That could be Aaron Rodgers, but I'm told the former… pic.twitter.com/7fTYjp9HKn

After he was released by the Denver Broncos, Russell Wilson signed a one-year deal with the Steelers for the veteran’s minimum. In 11 starts, he threw for 2,482 yards and 16 touchdowns against five interceptions.
Russell Wilson Would Be A Good “Bridge” QB Option For Giants

Wilson isn’t in his prime anymore, but he provided above-average quarterback play for the Broncos in 2023 and looked solid early on in Pittsburgh before the offense unraveled over the final month of 2024.
At 36 years of age, Wilson isn’t a long-term option for an NFL team anymore. But he can be a decent bridge quarterback option for the Giants while they figure out who they want to pursue as the long-term guy behind center.
