League owners reportedly want a significant change going forward when it comes to the process of firing NFL coaches.
This year alone, seven new NFL coaches — nearly a quarter of the league’s 32 teams —were hired: Ben Johnson (Chicago Bears), Pete Carroll (Las Vegas Raiders), Brian Schottenheimer (Dallas Cowboys), Kellen Moore (New Orleans Saints), Mike Vrabel (New England Patriots), Aaron Glenn (New York Jets) and Liam Coen (Jacksonville Jaguars).
According to a report from Mike Sando of The Athletic, New York Giants owner John Mara made headlines around the league when he retained head coach Brian Daboll and GM Joe Schoen despite saying he had “run out of patience.”
Sando’s report says some believe Mara “reluctantly” decided to keep them. A league executive then told Sando that some NFL owners are pushing for teams to stop firing their coaches for the sake of saving money.
“There is a big push by the owners to stop firing people and eating all this dead money with coaches. Some owners are paying credence to that,” the executive told Sando.

The Saints fired Dennis Allen midseason when he was signed through the 2025 season. Robert Saleh lasted just five games with the Jets after a 2-3 start, and he also had a year remaining on his deal.

Regarding other recent contracts for NFL coaches that backfired, Urban Meyer didn’t even last a year with the Jaguars after signing a lucrative multi-year deal in 2021. Speaking of one-and-done coaches, Jerod Mayo was let go by the Patriots in January after being hyped up as the ideal long-term successor to Bill Belichick.
NFL Coaches Are The Easy Scapegoats For Bad Owners

At the end of the day, the easy solution for a bad NFL owner is to fire a quality and well-respected head coach. How many coaches has Woody Johnson gone through again? And how much worse did the Jets get after firing Saleh?
As much hate as Mike McCarthy got in Dallas, this was a Super Bowl-winning HC with the Green Bay Packers who led the Cowboys to three straight 12-win seasons. Jaguars owner Shad Khan is now on his seventh head coach since buying the team in 2012. Just saying.
