The Carolina Panthers have done a bunch of shocking things in the last few weeks that include firing Ron Rivera, signing former head coach Matt Rhule, and then given him a huge contract.
That is a problem.
Rhule signed a seven-year, $60 million deal with the Panthers that could be worth up to $70 million if he meets incentives. One NFL coach told Robert Klemko of The Washington Post that other owners around the league are irate with David Tepper for shelling out so much cash for an unproven guy.
“The biggest thing I’ll say is when they offered a chance to be here for seven years, it spoke to me about the belief that we were going to do this together and do it the right way and there was no doubt,” Rhule said. “There was really no doubt the night before from my family and there was really no doubt from me, after just having that synergy that we were going to be here.”
Rhule has never been a head coach in the NFL but he is now one of the NFL’s highest-paid head coaches. Because of that contract, other head coaches in the college ranks will now look for something similar to leave their school in the future.
