Just hours before tragedy struck, NFL icon John Elway appeared relaxed and social at a private party in La Quinta, California.
Photos obtained by TMZ show Elway mingling with celebrities at The Madison Club on Saturday, just before a golf cart accident claimed the life of his close friend and longtime agent, Jeff Sperbeck.
The gathering, reportedly a prelude to a local music festival, drew several high-profile guests, including model Cindy Crawford and actor Ashton Kutcher. Someone photographed Elway at the bar around 4:30 p.m., chatting and sipping from a cup, though what was in the cup remains unclear.

By 6:50 p.m., Elway was behind the wheel of a golf cart when it crashed near the event grounds, with Sperbeck riding as a passenger.
Tragedy Strikes Just Moments Later
The crash left Sperbeck with serious injuries, and he died four days later. The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department confirmed on Wednesday that they’re investigating the incident. Details remain limited, and authorities have yet to release further information on the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Elway, devastated by the loss, shared an emotional statement reflecting on the depth of their relationship. “I am absolutely devastated and heartbroken by the passing of my close friend, business partner and agent Jeff Sperbeck,” Elway said on Wednesday. “There are no words to truly express the profound sadness I feel with the sudden loss of someone who has meant so much to me.”
