The United States Football League has begun its 2022 season and they are currently showing off some new ideas.
The USFL has chips implanted in their footballs that can determine if the ball has reached the first-down marker. As a fan, that seems like a better solution than using a marker.
However, players in the startup league are not happy about it.
“Hearing there are a lot of unhappy @USFL players – esp. kickers & QBs – related to the chip tech in the footballs. Claims are the extra 4-5oz. isn’t distributed evenly & is causing anomalies.
A source told me specialists are unhappy: “Pissed is an understatement.”
This technology could lead to perfecting the technology that eventually automates first downs instead of having referees make the decision manually. The NFL has had issues with whether officials properly declared a first down over the years.
It will be interesting to see how the USFL adjusts to the complaints of players regarding the chip in the ball.
