Hockey fans are loving Alexander Ovechkin’s epic celebration after breaking the NHL’s goals record on Sunday afternoon.
In the second period of the Washington Capitals’ road game against the New York Islanders, Alexander Ovechkin wired home a power play goal past Ilya Sorokin to set the all-time NHL goals record at 895, breaking the record that Wayne Gretzky held for 31 years:

Gretzky holds so many records that were once deemed unbreakable. Nobody is going to break record for points (2,857), but it’s astonishing that Alexander Ovechkin managed to break The Great One’s goal-scoring record in this era of hockey.
The 63-year-old Gretzky played in an era where goaltenders were nothing close to the elite athletes of today, and where scoring 50 goals and 100 points in a season was hardly “impressive.”
Ovechkin missed 16 games earlier this season with a broken leg. Incredibly, the 39-year-old is now up to 42 goals in just 61 games. Up next, it’s time for the “Great Eight” to hit the 900-goal milestone.
Alexander Ovechkin Can Shift Focus Back To A Stanley Cup

With Ovechkin breaking the all-time goals record, the Capitals can now resume their focus on bringing home the franchise’s second Stanley Cup championship. With Ovie approaching his 40th birthday, the Capitals have limited opportunities remaining to win it all with this group of players.
