A women’s hockey game was stopped for the most bizarre reason on Thursday, with Team USA’s Caroline Harvey at the center of it all.
Harvey was representing the United States against Germany in an IIHF Women’s World Championship quarterfinal game in Czechia when her mobile phone fell on the ice, causing the officials to bring a halt to proceedings.
A ref picked the device up from the ice and handed it to a member of the Germany staff, who raised it toward their bench in an effort to get the owner to fess up. But replays would show that it came from Harvey’s person while she was getting up, following a collision with an opposing player.
“I would skate as far away from that phone if I thought to myself, ‘Oh, that might’ve been mine,’’ a commentator joked. “Where would you keep it?”

“Where would you keep it?” is a great question, as hockey uniforms don’t usually come with pockets. But the phone likely got stuck in Caroline Harvey’s equipment.
Fortunately, it wasn’t damaged, and the game continued without incident.
USA won the match comfortably at 3-0, and the margin could have been a lot larger had the German goalie not had an incredible game. She made an astonishing 47 saves.
It’s not often that you see stuff like what happened with Caroline Harvey take place during hockey games, but it’s not a first. Something similar happened during a KHL matchup in January, when Nikita Dynyak of Ak-Bars dropped her mobile device.
“I had it on the shelf behind me, I put it down, took off my elbow pads, and when I turned around, it fell behind me. And I didn’t feel anything,” she said.
“Like putting a cigarette behind your ear and not feeling it. I went out and didn’t understand anything at first.”
Not something you’d ever expect to see happen in a game a few years ago.
