NHL legend Wayne Gretzky is back in the headlines, but not because of his political views this time around.
Over the past month, Wayne Gretzky has been under fire by Canadians due to his support for President Donald Trump amid the latter’s calls for the nation to become the 51st state, and because of his actions at the 4-Nations Face-Off final while serving as Canada’s honorary captain.
But while Gretzky deals with that backlash, the four-time Stanley Cup champion now has a legal matter to deal with. According to a report from TMZ, “The Great One” is suing former business partner Veera Mahajan after he claims she filed a “meritless” lawsuit against him there years ago.
In 2022, Mahajan sued Gretzky after he endorsed a weight loss gum called “OMG” (overeating management gum). Wayne’s wife, Janet, was a spokesperson for the OMG product.
Mahajan claims she invested in the product after Gretzky said he lost 35 pounds from the gum, only to walk back on it:
“In her ’22 lawsuit, Mahajan said she invested in the co. after Gretzky had claimed he lost 35 pounds in a few weeks from chewing on the product. She claimed Wayne later admitted that he lied about the weight loss — and it tanked the biz. She sued for fraud and was seeking unspecified damages.
Gretzky fought the lawsuit and in 2024, she filed to dismiss the case … and the former hockey player claims she had to fold because the lawsuit was frivolous to begin with.”
According to a TMZ report, Wayne Gretzky denies lying about his weight loss. In his lawsuit, the TNT NHL analyst says Mahajan only tried suing him because she thought he’d settle “for millions to avoid potential negative publicity.”

Wayne Gretzky Keeps Making Headlines

Wayne and Janet Gretzky were at Donald Trump’s celebration after the latter won the 2024 United States presidential election. The Gretzkys also attended Trump’s inauguration on Jan. 20.
Canadian NHL fans were disappointed when Gretzky showed up to the 4 Nations Face-Off final without any Team Canada merchandise. He wore a standard suit and gave the American players a “thumbs up” without addressing the Canadian players.
Trump and Janet have defended the hockey icon on social media, with the latter stating her husband is heartbroken over the backlash he’s received from Canadians. However, Gretzky himself hasn’t commented on his friendship with Trump, or if he supports the idea of Canada becoming the 51st state.
