Authorities arrested Diego Maradona’s former bodyguard, Julio Cesar Coria, in a dramatic twist in the ongoing investigation into the football legend’s death.
Prosecutors accused Coria of lying under oath during a trial that examines the alleged medical negligence leading to Maradona’s passing in November 2020.
Coria worked with Maradona for five years and stayed with him at his residence in Tigre, near Buenos Aires when he died of heart failure. Initially, the court called Coria a witness due to his proximity to the star, but prosecutors quickly scrutinized his testimony. Prosecutor Patricio Ferrari accused him of perjury, leading judges to order his immediate detention.
Twist In The Trial

During his testimony, Coria claimed he had not spoken with Maradona’s doctor, Leopoldo Luque, before the footballer’s death and insisted he was not friends with him. However, the messages on WhatsApp that were presented in court revealed that the two had not only discussed Maradona’s health but also arranged a barbecue. Coria initially omitted key details, such as psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov’s attempt at CPR, but later acknowledged it under questioning. This contradiction led to his swift arrest after a brief recess.
The trial, which began on March 11 and will run through the summer, has gripped Argentina. Prosecutors charged seven medical professionals, including Luque, Cosachov, and several nurses, with homicide with possible intent- a serious offense carrying a potential 25-year prison sentence. A separate trial for nurse Gisella Dahiana Madrid will occur later this year.

Ferrari described Diego Maradona’s final days as a “House of Horrors” and presented a graphic image of the footballer in court. He argued that the medical team acted “inadequately, deficiently, and recklessly,” ultimately causing Maradona’s death.
The case, initially classified as manslaughter, escalated after medical reports painted a damning picture of negligence. Prosecutors must prove that the accused knowingly put Maradona’s life at risk and failed to intervene. As the trial unfolds, the world watches closely, waiting to see if justice will prevail for one of football’s greatest icons.
