Lionel Messi waved to the supporters and smiled like crazy after winning his first World Cup. Argentina is atop the world again, World Cup champions for the first time since 1986, defeating the defending champion France 4-3 in what is being called the best fianl in history.
Messi also became the first male player to score at every stage of the World Cup.
It took years of disappointment, a brief retirement from the Argentina national team, and five World Cup appearances, but the legendary soccer player finally came out on top.
After the game, however, ESPN found a way to make that moment extremely cringe-worthy.
The ESPN Twitter account sent out a graphic that confused everybody.
“Messi can finally rest and watch the sun rise on a grateful universe,” with an image of Thanos holding the World Cup trophy and wearing a Messi Argentina jersey.
This was just unnecessary and fans let them know about it.
Despite the terrible post, history will only remember that on a December night in Qatar, the world’s most popular player finally won soccer’s most important trophy, as his country beat France in one of the most thrilling finals in World Cup history.WANT MORE FROM TOTALPROSPORTS?
